Direction of Travel is the third studio album from She Makes War.

Drawing on grunge and 90s alt-rock, it's an album of heartfelt and bittersweet songs. It was written and produced by Laura Kidd, mixed by Dan Austin (Doves, Pixies) and features guest appearances from Tanya Donelly (Belly) and Mark Chadwick (The Levellers).

Critical Reception

Nina Keen in Narc Magazine awards the album 5/5, and says "She Makes War’s third album of ‘gloom pop’ feels like a step up. The grand songs, like single Drown Me Out, are more imposing; the simple songs, like Paper Thin (an early favourite to win my Song of 2016) are more unassuming, and more stunning as a result…Put this album on some good speakers or headphones, turn it right up and let it swallow you. Drift through the sea of its beauty." [1]

Mustafa Mirreh in The Flux Presents also gives the album 5/5 and says it's "12 new songs of grunge-inflected alt rock and fearless artistry, levelled by Kidd’s infectious cinematic soundscapes and confessional songwriting. Direction of Travel spills all sorts of emotions but it’s how Laura embraces and conquers them that truly makes this an album to remember." [2]

Gavin Brown in indie music site Electric Banana gave the album 4/5, and said it is "perfect for fans of Cat Power...a thoughtful and very human album jam packed full of very real emotion and will undoubtedly be the soundtrack for many joyous occasions and heartbreaks..." [3]

Max Mazonowicz, The Digital Fix, 8/10: "She Makes War has delivered one of the most fulfilling experiences of 2016 so far....Grungey, tuneful, fragile, bitter, and brilliant." [4]

Pavlis, Outline Online, 10/10: "Each song has the strength and identity to stand alone but together they make an album that demands that it be listened to as a whole, in one sitting, without distraction. In an age of short attention spans and twitchy fingers hovering over the fast forward button, this is a rare and refreshing thing." [5]

George Meixner in Drunken Werewolf says that "it is (the album's) tender heart that allows it to stand out as more than a merely ‘up and down’ gothic teen emotional experience. Signing off with "The Best" and the parting words, “Goodnight sweet friend” and, “Sweetheart drink up, Be all you dreamed of” they are just unpretentiously lovely. It’s her best work to date, painting a detailed, brooding and atmospheric landscape." [6]

Christine Caruana at Victim of Sound says that "Direction of Travel comes straight from the heart and is an interesting record from beginning to end. What could have been nothing but a Summer fling, has well and truly blossomed into a long term relationship with the music of She Makes War. Direction of Travel will surely have even the biggest commitaphobe ready to take that big step.
